The word Borzoi means "swift" in Russian and in the 1700s, a Russian noble imported sight hounds from Arabia for the purpose of hunting. These first hounds all died from the intense cold of Russian winters. Thinking out his plan more carefully, that same duke imported more sight hounds and crossed them with a hardy native Collie-type dog. The offspring of this cross thrived and was developed into the modern Borzoi, or Russian Wolfhound. The design of this piece was inspired by the beautiful hand painted Russian lacquer story boxes with their intricate detail and ornamentation. The Russian story box version of Sleeping Beauty, "The Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs," tells of how the Tsarevna's Borzoi desperately tried to warn the Princess to not eat the poisoned apple given to her by her disguised stepmother.
