Fionn Mac Cumhal and the Children of Turrean
Art by Carmon Deyo
Story by DeborahAnne Mac Gillivray

Turrean, the most beautiful of Goddesses, was turned into a scruffy Irish wolfhound by a jealous faery queen, Uchtdealbh. The spell somehow was flawed, instead turning Turrean into the most magnificent hound on earth. Kept prisoner at the faery's home in Galway Bay, she and her two sons, Bran and Sgeolon, were rescued by her brother, Fionn MacCumhal, the great warrior-chief. Turrean and the evil faery represent the maiden and the crone, the theme echoed in the children's tale of Snow White.

Her sons retained their shape as dogs for the rest of their lives, often portrayed as guard dogs near Fionn. One day while hunting, they came upon a beautiful red deer that the hounds refused to attack. The deer followed them back to the Dun, and when it passed through the gates, a mallachd (curse) was broken and she was transformed into a beautiful woman, Sabd. She became Fionn's wife until the faeries tricked her and transforming her into a red deer again.
