One of the most familiar Irish Wolfhound legends is that of Gelert, the hound of Llewelyn, Prince of North Wales. Taking place in the 13th century, it tells of how Gelert slew a great wolf to save his master's son. Bred to hunt the now extinct gigantic Irish elk and the great wolves that roamed Ireland, the origins of the Irish Wolfhounds can be traced back as early as 273 BC. Their dominant traits of loyalty and courage are still found in them today, more than 2,000 years later. Though fierce in battle, these dogs are still known as the 'gentle giants' for their loving eyes, kind temperaments and gentle hearts..
