Beautiful interlaced patterns of Celtic knots achieved their greatest beauty in the richly decorated pages of the books of Durrow, Lindisfarne and Kells. Ranging from greyhounds to griffins, the interlaced animals of Celtic art evolved from a fusion of European traditions. The dog motif originated in ancient Ulster and was the symbol of the Dalriada tribe. Its symbolism, especially as it appears in those gospels, represents faith.
