Sterling Mermaid pendant 1 5/8"...$50
A legend from the Isle of Man tells of a mermaid who called on Mannan Mac Lir, god of the headlands, for aid as she was about to be speared by hunters. Mannan showed mercy to her and she was transformed into a wren and flew away. From this tale, the feather of the wren became a charm against drowning and no sailor would venture onto the sea without one. It became the custom to hunt wrens for their feathers on New Year's Day, the anniversary of this transformation. When Christianity was brought to the Islands, the date was moved to December 26th and the hunting of the wrens was associated with the martyrdom of St. Stevens. This became the modern Boxing Day Celebration in Britain where wrens are ceremoniously carried in boxes by children.
